Neurology for the Speech-Language Pathologist presents the fundamentals in understanding the nervous system in the context of communication. The book takes into consideration the nervous anatomic systems, such as sensory pathways. The text first introduces the speech-language neurology, and then proceeds to discussing the organization and neural function of the nervous system. Next, the book relates the nervous anatomic systems to language, speech, and hearing. The text also covers clinical speech syndromes and disorders. The book will be most useful to speech pathologists and therapists. Neurologists and neurosurgeons will also greatly benefit from the text.

Clinical Neuroscience for Communication Disorders: Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology offers a comprehensive and easy-to-understand introduction to neuroscience for undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the field of communication disorders. Packed with features to aid student understanding, this textbook introduces the neurologic underpinnings of systems involved in communication (speech, language, cognition, and hearing) and swallowing, from the nervous system to the anatomy of the head and neck. A highly readable writing style makes abstract and complex material accessible to students and provides just the right amount of information to challenge yet not overwhelm students. What sets this book apart is the extensive infusion of clinical application. Each chapter begins by tying the content to the everyday clinical applications for speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and related professionals and includes clinical cases to illustrate neural functions. In addition to coverage of the main systems, this text contains chapters devoted to neuroplasticity, communication, and cognition to move beyond basic anatomy to the key principles of contemporary neuroscience and application of the concepts discussed. Additionally, explicit connections are drawn between cranial nerves, the oral mechanism examination, and clinicall swallowing assessment. The clinical cases cover a variety of both pediatric and adult scenarios designed to highlight the interconnectedness of neural systems and the complexity of neurologically-based communication disorders. The cases span the breadth of clinical practice—developmental and acquired disorders, pediatric and adult cases, and disorders of speech, language, cognition, and hearing—and are cross-referenced with each of the other chapters for improved understanding. Key Features: * More than 150 customized illustrations solidify connections between anatomy and physiology * Clinical cases throughout the text and expanded ver

The updated text reflects advances in neuroscience and invaluable insights from Leonard L. LaPointe, one of the foremost teachers and practitioners in the field of brain-based communication disorders today. The book features beautiful illustrations from the recently published second edition of the Schuenke atlases and new content on cognition, higher cortical function, the spinal cord, structural damage, and clinic-pathological effects. Divided into seven chapters, the book is presented in a logical framework, starting with a concise, illustrated overview of anatomy of the brain and nervous system. This approach ensures mastery of introductory concepts before readers move on to more advanced material. The text covers traditional acquired speech-language conditions such as aphasia and neuromotor speech disorders, cognition and swallowing disorders, communication impairments caused by traumatic brain injury, multisystem blast injuries, and degenerative disorders of the nervous system. Key Highlights More than 450 exquisitely rendered full-color illustrations delineate basic anatomy and physiology, multiple visual perspectives, and impacted and interrelated body structures Descriptive legends and text bridge the gap between neuroanatomic principles and clinical applications Tables, charts, and concise text clearly detail the role of anatomical structures in normal communication and what happens when they dysfunction This remarkable atlas is essential reading for graduate and undergraduate students in speech-language pathology, audiology, and communication sciences. MATLAB® Primer for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology provides training and access to MATLAB®, the computational language developed by MathWorks®. While there are MATLAB® textbooks and manuals written for the field of engineering, there are no textbooks targeting allied heath disciplines, particularly speech-language pathology and audiology. Research and practice in this field can greatly benefit from quantification and automation in data management, a domain that is increasingly labor-intensive. The text anticipates and promotes increased reliance on quantification and automation in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. This book is intended for students, practitioners, and researchers in speech-language pathology and audiology who wish to increase their productivity by incorporating and automating common research procedures and data-analysis calculations, or who wish to develop new tools and methods for their own paradigms and data processing. It assumes no prior knowledge of programming, but requires the reader to have a grasp of basic computer skills, such as managing folders, moving files, and navigating file paths and folder structures. Content and style are chosen so as to lower the threshold for an audience who has limited training in computer science. Concepts are presented in a personalized writing style (almost a dialogue with the reader), along with a didactic format similar to programmed instruction, using applications and work assignments that are concrete and manageable. Key features include: * A comprehensive introduction for the user in an effort to limit background knowledge needed to understand the content * Several mathematical review appendices * Exercises for the student to apply skills learned in laboratory and clinical applications Disclaimer: Please note that ancillary content (such documents, audio, and video) may not be included as published in the original print version of this book.

Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders: Methods for Systematic Inquiry, Fourth Edition is a comprehensive yet comprehendible text meant for instructors and students of research methods in the field of communication sciences and disorders. This forward-thinking book reflects the movement toward evidence-based practice in speech-language pathology and audiology. The authors ensure that the concepts associated with evidence-based practice are integrated throughout the chapters. Rather than treating empirical research and searching for clinical evidence as separate topics, this text presents both as different applications of a process of scientific inquiry. The order of the chapters reflects the steps a researcher or clinician might complete when conducting an investigation. Also included are features that help students be more active in learning the material. Each chapter has a set of review questions or case scenarios that can be used as homework, as probe questions in class, or as a basis for group activities. In addition, the authors provide lists of supplemental readings from the research literature in the field. New to the Fourth Edition: * New author: Jaimie L. Gilbert for an enhanced audiology perspective * New chapter: Writing a Literature Review * Reorganized for better flow of information * Various new and updated references to reflect the current state of research * Additional illustrations and tables * Expanded material on critical appraisal Disclaimer: Please note that ancillary content (such as documents, audio, and video, etc.) may not be included as published in the original print version of this book.

The stimulus for writing this book arose from the author's perception of a lack of available texts which adequately integrate the subjects of neuroanatomy and functional neurology with the practice of speech language pathology. This perception was gained from almost two decades of teaching in the areas of neuroanatomy and acquired neuro logical speech-language disorders to speech pathology students initially at the South Australian College of Advanced Education and, for the past five years, at the University of Queensland. Although a plethora of excellent texts devoted specifically to each of the subjects of neuroanatomy, neurology and aphasiology have been published, few have attemped to integrate these individual subject areas in such a way as to provide a more clear understanding of the neurological bases of clinically recognized forms of aphasia and motor speech disorders. In writing this text, I have attempted to provide a better balance between neuroanatomy-neurology and. speech-language pathology. Relevant areas of neuroanatomy and neurology are introduced and discussed in the context of specific speech and language disorders. In this way, I have aimed at providing a better link between the relevant neuroanatomical and neurological knowledge on the one hand, and specific neurologically based communication disorders on the other, in order to enhance the reader's understanding of the origins, course and prognosis of these disorders. Of course the writing of any book requires the support and encouragement of other people. This text was no exception.
