The 13th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics, organized by the National Bureau of Standards, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, and the University of Colorado, was held in Boulder, Colorado, August 21 to 25, 1972, and was sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Army Office of Scientific Research, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, the U.S. Navy Office of Naval Research, the International Institute of Refrigeration, and the Internation al Union of Pure and Applied Physics. This international conference was the latest in a series of biennial conferences on low temperature physics, the first of which was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949. (For a complete list of previous L T conferences see p. viii. Many of these past conferences have been coordinated and sponsored by the Commission on Very Low Temperatures of IUPAP. Subsequent LT conferences will be scheduled triennially beginning in 1975. LT 13 was attended by approximately 1015 participants from twenty five countries. Eighteen plenary lectures and 550 contributed papers were presented at the Conference. The Conference began with brief introductory and welcoming remarks by Dr. R.H. Kropschot on behalf of the Organizing Committee, Professor J. Bardeen on behalf of the Commission on Very Low Temperatures of the IUP AP, and Pro fessor O.V. Lounasmaa on behalf of the International Institute of Refrigeration. The eighth London Award was then presented by Professor E.

Why do governments turn to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and with what effects? This book argues that governments enter IMF programs for economic and political reasons, and finds that the effects are negative on economic growth and income distribution. By bringing in the IMF, governments gain political leverage - via conditionality - to push through unpopular policies. Note that if governments desiring conditions are more likely to participate, estimating program effects is not straightforward: one must control for the potentially unobserved political determinants of selection. This book addresses the selection problem using a dynamic bivariate version of the Heckman model analyzing cross-national time-series data. The main finding is that the negative effects of IMF programs on economic growth are mitigated for certain constituencies since programs also have distributional consequences. But IMF programs doubly hurt the least well off in society: they lower growth and shift the income distribution upward.
English self-forms and related words from other Germanic languages (e.g. Dutch zelf, Swedish själv, etc.) are used in two different functions: as ‘intensifiers’ (e.g. The president himself made the decision) and as markers of reflexivity (John criticized himself). On the basis of a comparative syntactic and semantic analysis, this book addresses the question of why two such apparently different functions can be expressed by the same word. This question is answered by showing that both intensifying and reflexive self-forms can be analysed as expressing the concept of ‘identity’. In the first part of The Grammar of Identity, the most central facts concerning the distribution of intensifiers in Germanic languages are surveyed and a detailed syntactic and semantic analysis is provided. It is shown that all instances of intensifiers can be analysed as expressions of an identity function. The second part of the book offers an analysis of reflexive self-forms which is based on recent theories of reflexivity, modifying these in some important respects. In particular, the distribution of reflexive self-forms is explained with reference to semantic properties of the sentential environment. In this way, it can be shown that reflexive self-forms – like intensifiers – can be analysed as expressions of an identity function. In addition to providing a thorough comparative description of the hitherto poorly described area of intensifiers in Germanic languages, this book offers an answer to a long standing question in descriptive and theoretical linguistics, namely why self-forms are used in two apparently different functions. By combining analytical methods from syntax, lexical semantics and sentence semantics the study moreover contributes to an understanding of the interaction between structure, meaning and context in a central area of lexico-grammar.

This monograph gives access to the theory of continuous linear representations of general real Lie groups to readers who are already familiar with the rudiments of functional analysis and Lie groups.
